What is Scoliosis?
Scoliosis is a medical condition characterized by an abnormal curvature of the spine, often resembling an “S” or “C” shape when viewed from the back. While a healthy spine runs straight down the middle of the back, a spine affected by scoliosis bends to the side. This curvature can range from mild to severe.
Types of Scoliosis
Thoracic Scoliosis: This is a spinal deformity that causes the spine to curve sideways in the upper and middle back. It’s the most common type of scoliosis.
Lumbar: Lumbar scoliosis is a condition that causes an abnormal sideways curve in the lower spine, or lumbar area. It is characterized by a distinctive “C” shaped curve in the lower spine.
Double Curve: Double curve scoliosis, also known as S-curve scoliosis, is a type of scoliosis that causes the spine to have two curves that bend in opposite directions, forming the shape of an “S”.
Thoracolumbar: Thoracolumbar scoliosis is a type of scoliosis that causes a sideways curve in the spine where the upper and lower back meet.
What Causes Scoliosis?
Idiopathic Scoliosis: This is the most common form, and its cause is unknown, hence the term “idiopathic.” Research is ongoing to better understand the mechanisms behind this type of scoliosis. It most frequently occurs during growth spurts in adolescence.
Congenital Scoliosis: This type is present at birth and results from abnormal spinal development in the womb.
Neuromuscular Scoliosis: Caused by underlying conditions such as cerebral palsy or muscular dystrophy, which affect muscles and the ability to support the spine.
Degenerative Scoliosis: This occurs in adults, often as a result of disc degeneration, arthritis, or other age-related spinal changes.
Childhood vs. Adult Scoliosis
Childhood Scoliosis: Scoliosis can develop in infancy, childhood, or adolescence. It is most commonly diagnosed in adolescence during periods of rapid growth. Idiopathic scoliosis is the most common type in children and adolescents, with no identifiable cause. Although many cases are mild, severe cases may progress and lead to complications such as reduced lung capacity or chronic back pain.
Adult Scoliosis: In adults, scoliosis often develops due to the wear and tear on the spine over time, leading to degenerative changes. This type, known as adult degenerative scoliosis, is typically the result of gradual breakdown of the intervertebral discs and joints. Adults may also have scoliosis that carried over from childhood or adolescence, which may or may not have been addressed. Common symptoms in adults include back pain, stiffness, and reduced mobility, especially as the curvature progresses.
Ways to Address Scoliosis
When it comes to managing scoliosis, the treatment approach depends on several factors, including the patient’s age, the severity of the spinal curve, and overall health. Dr. Gus and Dr. Jacqueline both provide a range of non-invasive solutions to help address scoliosis.
Corrective Chiropractic Care: At Great Life Chiropractic, Dr. Gus and Dr. Jacqueline both specialize in specific chiropractic adjustments to target spinal misalignment which is one of the core challenges of scoliosis.
Postural Correction Therapy: Scoliosis often causes postural imbalances, including uneven shoulders or hips. Dr. Gus and Dr. Jacqueline both incorporate postural correction therapy into their treatment plans to help realign the body and strengthen the muscles that support the spine.

I came to Dr Jackie for help during my pregnancy in the second trimester with extreme hip and lower back pain. Moving and handling my toddler were extremely uncomfortable and nothing was helping. I came in with a budget and very concerned I wouldn’t be able to get the help I needed but they helped make it possible for me and also I’ve been consistently coming here week after week into my third trimester (currently at week 34) and feeling much much much more at ease than I was in the second. I am beyond grateful for the care and attention they provide and would HIGHLY recommend them for any pregnant moms out there looking for help with pains. I’ll most definitely be continuing chiropractic care here into postpartum and beyond. Thank you Dr Jackie and team for your help!!!Posted on Chris ClaytonTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. This was my first time going to a chiropractor and am very grateful that I found Great Life Chiropractic. Dr Gus and Jackie and their team have been such a pleasure to see every week. I found their practice to be very educational and accommodating. They moved cautiously with me because of my reservations and put together a plan to help my recovery. I was going twice a week and after three months there was noticeable improvements with my lower back and neck. They were honest and transparent with me (using X-rays and other testing measures) and have since taken me down to 1x every two weeks. I am tracking well with my exercises, stretches, and movements and look forward to my visits to keep me in-line and aligned. No more shooting pains when I sneeze and lack of mobility in neck. Would highly recommend this family chiropractor office.Posted on Elizabeth HoustonTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. The best family Chiropractic experience ever. Everyone is truly amazing and caring. No regrets!Posted on Ryan CoelloTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Great family office! High quality care in a beautiful office. Look no further than Great Life Chiropractic!Posted on Nila CharlesTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. This office is the best chiropractor choice. They combine “western” medicine with the “whole body” approach you expect from chiropractic treatment. I get both x-rays to actually see what they are treating and behavioral guidance. I struggle with chiropractors that are too new age versus too crack and go and Great Life perfectly balances them. I am not looking to make the appointment long but if I have any questions they answer them. Highly recommended!Posted on Roberta SeaveyTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Great Life Chiropractic is a fantastic practice. The entire staff will nurture you. Dr Gus is able to treat any issues. Then if you stay on a maintenance program which is easy with their great hours you will feel good!Posted on Elizabeth OgdenTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google.
