New Research Examines the Role of Chiropractic Care in Gastrointestinal Health
Research highlights emerging evidence and call for larger clinical trials
ATLANTA, Georgia – 2026
Recent research reported in the Annals of Vertebral Subluxation Research presents a comprehensive review of current literature exploring the intersection of chiropractic care and gastrointestinal (GI) health, along with a clinical feasibility study evaluating a structured 3-month chiropractic-centered integrative care protocol in private practice settings.

Gastrointestinal disorders affect an estimated 60–70 million Americans daily, typically managed through medication, surgery, and dietary changes. Despite the prevalence of these conditions, research investigating conservative, non-pharmacological approaches such as chiropractic adjustments remains limited. This publication expands that body of knowledge by synthesizing nine peer-reviewed studies involving chiropractic care for conditions including Crohn’s disease, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), ulcerative colitis, chronic constipation, and generalized GI dysfunction.
Across reviewed case studies and clinical reports, patients experienced measurable improvements such as reduced diarrhea, improved bowel regularity, diminished abdominal pain, and quality-of-life elevation. Some reported full remission of symptoms following chiropractic care, particularly in Crohn’s and IBS cases. Although findings were positive, the authors emphasize the need for expanded research using larger samples and controlled methodology to verify efficacy, mechanism of action, and clinical scalability.
To complement the literature review, the authors conducted a feasibility study implementing a standardized protocol combining:
-
Chiropractic adjustments
-
Individualized supplementation based on GI-MAP stool analysis
-
Lifestyle and dietary modifications tailored to patient needs
One fully compliant participant completed the protocol, demonstrating clinical improvements including a 15-pound weight reduction, normalized stool coloration, elimination of bloating and gas, enhanced sleep quality, and reduced thoracic segmental dysfunction. GI-MAP trends also revealed normalization in key commensal bacteria associated with mucosal integrity and immune regulation.
This study contributes emerging insight into how chiropractic care may influence gastrointestinal function through autonomic modulation, neuroimmune interaction, and gut-brain axis pathways. The authors recommend future randomized controlled trials comparing chiropractic care alone, GI-focused nutritional protocols alone, and combined intervention arms.
